Crime Prevention – Beware! Burglaries are on the Rise!

Safeguarding Your Home

•Secure doors and windows at all times, if at home or away. The majority of would-be thieves enter homes through open windows or unlocked doors, only one in four break-ins involve forced entry.

•Keep garage doors shut.

•Always check to see who is at the door before opening it.

•Do not leave extra keys under doormats, potted plants, or any other obvious outdoor location.

•Do not put your name on your house or mailbox.

•Have a neighbor or friend collect your newspaper and mail if you plan on being away. Never cancel delivery - you do not know who will get that information.

•Keep drapes and blinds shut. Do not advertise the items in your home.

•Do not leave notes on the door for service people or family members. These alert the burglar that you are not home.

•Store cash, jewelry, and other valuables in a safe or safety deposit box instead of leaving them lying around the home.

•Supervise construction or repair people who come into your house.

•Install deadbolt locks on exterior doors; double cylinder deadbolts provide the greatest protection. The process of breaking through locks is too time-consuming for an intruder looking to get in and out quickly and with ease.

•Burglar alarms and dogs are both excellent for discouraging potential intruders. Again, burglars want to get in and out of homes quickly and without attracting attention by setting off alarms or dealing with dogs.

•Solid wood or metal doors offer the most security. Avoid installing hollow core doors or doors mostly made of glass.

•Install outside lights. Use motion detectors wherever possible.

•Keep bushes and plants trimmed that make it easy for burglars to hide.

•Consider a chain link fence instead of a solid wood one so that neighbors or patrol officers have a clear line of sight into your yard.

•When away from home, create the illusion that someone may still be there. Leave a TV or stereo on in the room where a burglar would most likely break in.

There has been an increase in the number of burglaries and thefts in neighborhoods throughout Harris County. However, residents can combat crime by taking added precautions in securing their homes and looking out for their neighbor’s homes. It is also important to be aware and report anything suspicious or out of the ordinary to police. Unfortunately, crime will always exist; nevertheless, many homeowners have drastically reduced burglaries and thefts in their neighborhoods by being proactive and adding the following safety tips to their home security plans:

Protecting Your Neighborhood

•Be the eyes and ears of your community. Statistically, when homeowners come together and look out for each other they experience a huge reduction in the number of crimes committed in their neighborhoods.

•Report all crime. If you are a witness to a crime, then it is your responsibility to inform proper authorities. Not reporting crime only encourages it!

•Work with the police. When residents and officers join forces it is a win/win situation for everyone. Police can provide information about the best way and time to contact them for emergency or non-emergency situations. In some instances, they will regularly patrol neighborhoods until crime rates are reduced.

•Keep a notepad handy to jot down descriptions of any strangers or strange vehicles you see in your neighborhood. Make sure to write down the license plate number of any strange vehicles. Be prepared to provide this information to police officers just in case an investigation is warranted.

Always remember that your responsibility is to report the crime. However, never put your safety in jeopardy by trying to prevent a crime or by making an arrest. The responsibility for apprehending criminals belongs to law enforcement officers and police. Harris County Precinct 7 Programs designed to help residents combat crime in their neighborhoods:

You Guys Rock!!!

On Friday, March 22nd, a Brentwood resident had her afternoon nap interrupted with a mobile alert from her Ring Video Doorbell. Checking the video, she saw that there was a strange man at her door. While talking to him through the speaker, he identified himself as CenterPoint Energy worker. He claimed he needed to gain access to her backyard for an annual check. She instructed him to wait because she was on her way to the front door. Instead of waiting, he went into the resident's back yard before she could verify his identity.

The resident immediately called CenterPoint Energy to see if anyone was scheduled to read her meters. They informed her that no one was on the schedule to be in the area. She also found out that no one from Reliant Energy was scheduled to be in the area.

The resident filed a police report with HPD and Harris County Precinct 7. The stranger was driving a white pickup truck without any company markings. He was a white male approximately 6 feet tall wearing sunglasses, a dark ball cap, khaki shirt, and blue jeans.

If you notice anything suspicious in the neighborhood and would like to file a Non-Emergency Report with HPD call (713)884-3131.
